The Octopus Initiative

“When people know better, they do better” is the value that Octopus, a social initiative started by students at HLC International, was built on.

This ‘for students, by students’ initiative, was started at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, to enable students to connect with one another and discuss topics that are often swept under the rug in our society. This initiative strives to amplify the voices of young learners.

The name ‘Octopus’ was inspired by the intelligence, adaptability and empathy portrayed by Octopuses.

Twice a month, Octopus hosts bold and thought-provoking conversations. For example, a recent one was a  collaborative & interactive seminar on financial literacy aimed toward high school students, which included the role gender stereotypes play.

This session highlighted the importance of being financially literate as a life skill and addressed the myth that one needs an education in finance to be aware of concepts pertaining to money. With over forty attendees, this seminar piqued their curiosity to learn more about finances and emphasised the ways in which we can help in furthering financial literacy.

Octopus frequently collaborates with other youth-led initiatives and leaders in respective fields, to bring a combination of sessions – in the form of discussions, interactive seminars, and more With an audience across age groups – ranging from sixth grade to 12th grade they often include other schools.

With an overwhelmingly positive response, Nethra Nagarajan – a 12th grader at HLC International and the founder of Octopus believes Octopus has a bright future. With a charged up team of six fellow students and teacher mentors, she envisions this to be a sustainable initiative within as well as outside HLC.
