The Story of the Ambulance Dada

Karimul Haque – The Ambulance Dada

In 1998 Karimul Haque lost his mother due to the unavailability of an ambulance. Deeply shaken, Karimul Haque vowed that no one should die for the lack of treatment. He began by transporting a fellow worker on his motorbike and managing to save his life. This incident pushed him to start his motorcycle ambulance.

In his early days, people would mock and even laugh at him. But that didn’t stop Karimul from aiding his society at a time of need through the tough roads of Jalpaiguri District, West Bengal.

Once people saw the work that he was doing, their perception started to change. He provided hope to the people of  his district. Over time, Karimul and his sons got trained in administering basic first aid to the patients. Ambulance Dada regularly organises health camps in the village to ensure small niggling health issues are rectified.

He has converted a portion of his land to a hospital to conduct basic tests for sugar, blood pressure and even administer saline drips.

He has ferried over 5,500 patients in the last 20 years . Karimul says “ I may be 55 years of age but mentally and even physically I am not a day older than 30. It is my duty to serve those in need and I will do so until the day I can’t anymore”.
