Gender Equality in India
Gender equality may be a fundamental right yet as per India’s last census in 2011, female literacy stands at 65.46% compared to 82.14% of males. it’s believed that for every 100 girls in rural India only one reaches class 12 and almost 40% of women leave school even before reaching the fifth standard. The wage gap between Indian men and women is amongst the worst within the world, a report by a world confederation of charitable organisations, Oxfam, said. And further given to India’s patriarchal nature, violence remains a culturally accepted norm in most households and sometimes goes unreported and termed as a household matter. Often authorities also attempt to dust the matter off as a private matter within the family.
There has been slow progress over the last decades within the country towards equitable rights of women: more girls are now getting to school, fewer girls are being forced into early marriage and more and more women are serving in parliament and positions of leadership, and laws are being reformed to advance gender equality. Every small step has been an extended battle and we still have a long way still to travel to bring about equitable rights in India and our NGO partners are working tirelessly with various women organizations to foster this equality
