A Story of Compassion and Resilience

While much of the pandemic has been a story of misery and loss, it has also been one of compassion and resilience – of individuals and societies coming together and not just surviving but looking at it as an opportunity to help others. Here is a story of compassion and kindness of a teacher, Ms. Silva whose students were yearning to see her.

With so much energy in their veins and ideas in their minds it is hard to imagine what the young students and teachers felt during the pandemic.  For a teacher who was used to seeing her children everyday, they had become 57 tiny boxes on a screen. A lot of students suffered due to lack of devices or disabilities and were unable to continue their studies. But what really got to Ms. Silva was a text message from her 3rd grade student that read “ I am yearning for a hug”.

Ms. Silva thought about whether she could find a way to meet her students and embrace them finally.

She figured out a way to create the pandemic “hugging kit”  and started driving about on her hugging operation in late July 2020 blasting a classroom playlist her students loved. She says “Distance can’t destroy what we’ve built. I needed to show them that our bonds are still alive even if I’m not able to hold them every morning”. In a moment of tragedy Ms. Silva and her students have been able to showcase a series of moments of love and that are truly very powerful and inspiring.
