Child Rights and Me

Success Stories from Riverside School Ahmedabad.

Children’s rights are the human rights of children with particular attention to the rights of special protection and care afforded to minors, including their right to association with both parents, human identity as well as the basic needs for food, universal state-paid education, health care and criminal laws etc

We at aidbees in conversation with 5 students from Grade 5 of Riverside School explored child rights and were inspired and enlightened by the experiences the students went through over the last few months when they were trying to understand Child Rights. We have tried to capture their reflections in their words for you.

Project 1 – Working without Electricity

The neglect in switching off the lights and other electrical appliances when left unused is often understated. These young students went through a day of work without any electricity and realised how privilege played a vital role in the life they live. Here are some of their reflections

Project 2 – To live with restrictions to the number of clothes

The children had 3 pairs of clothes to use for a week in which they not only had to live in them 24*7 but they also had to wash them on their own to make sure they were kept clean. While this was challenging for the kids for they are used to changing clothes about three times a day they also realised how sometimes lack of clothing would leave them vulnerable.  Here are some of the reflections shared by the children of their experiences.

Project 3 – To take on Pulses Sorting Day

The students in this challenge had to sort tiny pulses like children who work for their living and on the completion of certain goals would achieve rewards like water, toilet break and meals of 2 rotis with onion/chilli or and salt. The food was handed to them in their hands and only when they achieved targets! While this was tough for the kids, it was even harder with them having to sit on their haunches throughout the program. The kids had some beautiful reflections and takeaways through this assignment.

Can you imagine sitting on your haunches for hours together? We couldn’t but these kids did.

The positive reflections and affirmations created by the students through the course of these projects are truly commendable. We hope you found their experience as inspiring as we did.
